General FAQs

1.    How does Brightside work?

We design and run online programmes, recruit and train volunteers, and facilitate meaningful conversations between mentors and mentees. We collaborate with partners (including schools and employers) to deliver mentoring programmes through our safe, secure and safeguarded online platform.

2.    How safe is online mentoring?

Our mentoring is completely safe. All mentors are DBS-checked and our customised filter system screens all messages and ensures messages are moderated by NSPCC-trained coordinators. Safeguarding is at the core of our technology; for more information please see our Safeguarding Policy

3.    What do the platform and app look like?

For mentees and mentors, our platform and app are easy to use from any device, incorporating our moderated messaging system and bespoke resources. For our partners, the platform allows coordinators to manage and track users to make running a programme simple. We’d be happy to demonstrate the platform, so if you’d like to see it and how it works then please get in touch.

Partner FAQs

1.    How do I work with Brightside?

It’s really easy to work with us, because we have the experience and expertise to support any organisation, regardless of their experience with online mentoring, to develop, managing and evaluate an impactful online mentoring programme. The first step for us with any new organisation is always a virtual meeting, to understand the aims and objectives of a programme and how we can best support, so if you’re interested in working with us just get in touch for a quick chat.

2.      What are the costs involved?

Our costs are based on the scale and scope of the programme and the level of our support. If you would like a quote or further information about working with us then please get in touch and we can schedule a virtual meeting.

3.    Does Brightside provide a good volunteering opportunity?

Mentoring with Brightside is a fantastic volunteering opportunity, providing a flexible and rewarding experience. All of our programmes take place online meaning people can volunteer using any device with internet access and at a time convenient to them. Volunteers also receive pro-programme training, the opportunity to develop key skills such as communication skills, and get to use their experience to have a direct impact on young people. Becoming a partner with Brightside also allows us to tailor the volunteer experience and foster a positive team experience too.

Mentor FAQs

1.    How does your online mentoring work?

Our mentoring takes place on the text-based Brightside Mentoring Platform and is built to be flexible to both yours and your mentees’ schedules. As opposed to live chat or video calls, the text-based platform offers you the flexibility to structure your own conversations with your mentees based on your availability and other commitments. We ask that you always reply to your mentees within 3-4 days to keep up the momentum of the mentoring conversation and with the Brightside Mentoring App, our mentoring is available on the go at any time that suits you.

Signing up to our network means you are eligible for any of our roles, though to be an online mentor you will need to complete a DBS check to make sure you can work with young people.

Our Safeguarding Policy is available to read here.

2.    What’s the time commitment?

We ask our mentors to commit 1-2 hours per week while their project is running to support up to three young people on our online mentoring platform.

Our mentoring projects typically range from 4 weeks to 4 months, and when project ends we’ll mark you as ready to take part in another one. We run our projects in collaboration with universities, schools and corporate organisations who will all require volunteers from different backgrounds for their different projects with us. The details that you give when you sign-up to our network with will help us identify the right projects for you.

3.    When do the projects run?

The majority of our online mentoring projects run during UK term time, and so we allocate volunteers to projects towards the end of each term ready for the next one. This means that if you sign up to volunteer with us between October-December, you will likely be allocated to a project in January. We do our best to allocate you to a project as soon as one becomes available, so keep an eye out for our emails!
